CENTRE FOR FINE WOODWORKING NEWSLETTER – JANUARY 2011
and a happy new year to you all from us here

Hi everyone, welcome to a long overdue newsletter. 2010 has been a big year for us, starting with our first out of Nelson exhibition in Christchurch and finishing with another wonderful graduate show at the Refinery. Photos of the exhibition pieces will be on our website in the next week or so.

"all is flux"
Larry Spitz our trust chair for the last four years decided it was time for the school to be given a good shake up recently; he came in with his two fellow trustees, David Thomas and Chris Feltham to explain that he had decided to resign as a trustee. Well crikey! You're probably aware of Larry's responsibilities at the Centre! They have been multitudinous; he liked to refer to himself as General Dogsbody but most especially he has been part of the administrative team and the keeper of the finances, all this, on top of and more often in the way of his woodworking. Those who know Larry will understand how dedicated he is to the cause and wellbeing of the Centre and it has been his guiding hand that has contributed enormously to the success of the school up to this point. Naturally everyone here at the school is very sad about Larry's decision. We hope you plan to make plenty of use of your big brown teacup Larry. Thanks for everything.

Dick Roberts
We were thrilled to learn recently that the trustees of the Dick Roberts estate have awarded us a very generous gift from Dick's estate and we express our sincere thanks to them. Dick was a Nelsonian of iconic status for many reasons and it will give us great pleasure to honour him by improving our workshop and student environment within the Centre for everyone who works and studies here.

Hot News on our new courses, lots of them!
There have been changes happening to the structure of both the full time and part time courses we have on offer.

Firstly a new group of short and more project focused courses are on offer. Anything from two to five days in length and covering specific areas such as outdoor furniture making (a specially designed trestle table), or toolmaking, through to making your own electric guitar or skateboard.

Secondly, we have modified our full time furniture makers programme making it six weeks shorter in length. This is to allow us to tackle some of the changes we wish to make to the workshop environment without disrupting classes. The new start date is March 14th. This gives us a more focussed programme and significantly it enables us to offer the full thirty-four week programme at a substantial reduction on previous years at $19990inc and each of the three terms for around $7000inc. If you are interested in the full time course or any of the individual courses then get in touch

Thirdly, changes to the full time programme mean some significant changes to the short courses which are components of the full time programme. All of them except beginning cabinetmaking and bending solid wood reduce in price and several are shorter by up to one week. Most of them have significant date changes, so if you are considering attending one of the components of the full time programme check out the details on the website.

2010 Exhibition Refinery Gallery. 10 Dec to 16 Jan
The graduate exhibition opened at the Refinery on December the 9th graced by the presence of the mayor, deputy mayor and several visiting ex students. A great time, as usual, was had by all. The buzz out there is that it's as good as ever and positively different. Thanks to Bernie Stokes for setting it all up, Helen for making sure it all went superbly and everyone else who contributed, especially the graduates. We've had a great year and you've done us proud.

We're looking forward to a great new year, all the best to you and we hope to see you here,
Cheers
John, Helen and the crew.
