May 2025 Newsletter

Welcome to our May Newsletter
This month has been all about dovetails with a range of cabinets and boxes under construction by the students of the FMP. The hand cut dovetail is said to be the mark of a craftsperson's skill, an opportunity to showcase not only hand skills but also artistry. There is a magic in carefully designing the layout of the tails; considering every detail, and a peace in cutting and fitting this beautiful joint. As a maker you can get wonderfully lost in the process. For the student, the magic is often in the satisfaction of achieving that perfect fit. For the tutor the real magic is seeing the delight on the students faces in the moment that they flush off that end grain to reveal that beautiful joint.
COMMUNITY TALK SERIES!
We're very excited to present a series of community talks with our wonderful tutors that come to teach at the school. The next one is with Stuart Faulkner, who is here from Australia teaching our Drawer Making course, Intro to Chair Making Course, Useful Jigs for the Home Workshop, and our fabulously fun upcoming weekend Shaker Box course.
Keep an eye on our next newsletter for information on the upcoming talk with Master Carver, Hape Kiddle on 11th July. Hape will be here at the school teaching during July, bringing his infectious enthusiasm and creativity to the school.
