Furniture Makers’ Programme - 2025

Some experiences change the way you work. Others change the way you see yourself. My time at the Centre for Fine Woodworking in Nelson did both.

In 2025, I joined seven other students on the full-time Professional Furniture Making course. We came together with different backgrounds, experiences and ambitions, but shared one thing — a passion for working with wood.

Having spent many years designing and making bespoke furniture, I thought I understood my craft. But the Centre opened my eyes to another level of furniture making. It taught me to slow down, to question my methods, and to appreciate the importance of precision, patience and good design.

The tutors brought a wealth of knowledge, skill and experience. Their willingness to share that knowledge, encourage individuality and challenge us to do better made the experience invaluable.

There was something special about being in a workshop surrounded by people who cared as much about the smallest detail as I did. We learned from our tutors, but we also learned from one another. Friendships were formed, ideas exchanged, and there was always a sense of encouragement and good humour.

For me, the course was more than an education. It was a turning point. It gave me the confidence to push my designs further, explore new techniques and develop my own voice as a furniture maker.

Today, through Black Woodpecker Studio, I design and make bespoke fine furniture influenced by the sea, traditional craftsmanship and the beauty of natural timber. Much of the confidence and inspiration behind this work grew from my time in Nelson.

I believe in furniture with soul. Furniture made with care, honesty and purpose. The Centre reinforced that belief.

I left with greater knowledge, lasting friendships and a renewed passion for my craft.

I would wholeheartedly recommend the Centre for Fine Woodworking to anyone serious about furniture making. Whether you are beginning your journey or looking to refine years of experience, it is a place that will challenge, inspire and stay with you long after you leave the workshop.
